Before the Storm

The checklist

  • Make sure exterior lighting is functional for use post-storm
  • Remove or tie down patio furniture and loose items
  • Clean gutters and drainage areas
  • Trim trees and branches near your house and enclosure
  • Take photos of your property for insurance documentation
  • Review your homeowner's insurance and coverage
  • If you have a generator, make sure it is working properly
  • Store important documents and valuables in waterproof containers
  • Prep a first aid kit
  • Know your evacuation zone and routes
  • Remove shade cloths or panels that can act like sails in high winds
  • Set aside basic tools: wrench, screwdrivers, utility knife, duct tape
  • Inspect any French drains or trench drains for blockages

What to check on a pool cage or lanai

The super gutter

It carries structural load as well as water. Look for sagging, separation from the fascia, or loose connections where the cage attaches — and clear it before the season, because an undersized or blocked gutter is what rots fascia over time.

Screens and spline

Brittle, faded mesh tears in high wind and takes the frame's fasteners with it. If panels are sagging or the spline is lifting, it is cheaper to deal with before a storm than after one.

Frame and fasteners

Rusted Tapcons, loose anchoring at the slab, and corrosion at the joints are the structural failures that turn a windy afternoon into a rebuild. Worth an inspection if the cage is more than ten years old.
